Senior Pygmy does are does that are aged two years and older. They are of breeding age and serve as the foundation of the herd. Our does at Whistling Wind Pygmies are bred to bucks that are hand selected, to enhance the breed characteristics and improve the overall genetics of our herd.

A pygmy doe can have one up to five kids in a single birth. It is most common for them to have twins. Twins or triplets are preferred, as there are typically less issues at kidding. Personally, we have had four separate quad birthings and on one occasion a set of quintuplets. This lead to us bottle feeding two or three kids from each set, as four and five kids at one time is overwhelming for the doe and she is unable to tend to all of them.

Does can and typically are shown after kiddings. According to the National Pygmy Goat Association (NPGA) rules, a doe must have a live birth before she may obtain a PGCH (Permanent Grand Champion) title. Timing is key between showing and kidding. In most cases, a doe will typically nurse her kids 8 - 10 weeks before weaning them. After weaning, she will need to be conditioned to show level. This is a process that could take an additional 2 months. The age of a doe doesn't determine how competitive she may be in the show ring. It is common to see a doe over the age of six in the arena.

These does are responsible for the future of the herd and therefore should be picked with careful consideration of what characteristics the goat breeder wants to demonstrate in their herd. While focusing on structure and breed characteristics, a well - balanced, short and cobby doe with a little extra length of body is key.
